Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Copperfield Flue Liner Replacement: The Marietta Owner’s Guide
We replace Copperfield flue liners in Marietta homes throughout the week, and most jobs run between $2,200 and $4,800 installed depending on the liner diameter, flue height, and how much of the old liner has to come out. We stock Copperfield-compatible stainless steel liners on our trucks for the most common sizes, so in many cases we can complete a replacement the same visit we diagnose it. Homeowners usually discover a failed liner one of two ways: they see flaking or crumbling material at the base of the fireplace, or they get a chimney inspection report that flags the liner with photos they can see for themselves.
Which Copperfield Models This Applies To
Copperfield has produced several liner lines over the years, and the compatibility question is the first thing we sort out. If you have a Copperfield stainless steel liner system installed in the last 15 to 20 years, we can almost always match it with a direct replacement or a Copperfield-equivalent liner from a professional trade brand we carry, including DuraFlex and Gelco. The key numbers are on the liner itself: the diameter (usually 4, 5, 5.5, or 6 inches for wood-burning, larger for some gas applications) and the alloy designation, typically 316L or 316Ti. If you can’t read the label, we measure at the flue collar and the top termination cap.
One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Copperfield’s corrugated single-wall liners and their smooth-wall variants share the same diameter specs but use different connector fittings at the appliance end. Mixing a smooth-wall liner with corrugated connectors from a different series creates gaps that leak flue gas. We always verify the specific Copperfield series before ordering or cutting anything. Alcott Chimney Marietta is an independent service provider and not affiliated with Copperfield, but we install Copperfield and Copperfield-compatible materials every week.

Signs Your Copperfield Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing
- Flaking metal or scaling inside the firebox. When a stainless liner’s protective oxide layer breaks down, the metal sheds thin flakes that fall toward the base of the chimney. This is the clearest physical sign and usually points to years of high-moisture exposure.
- Creosote crusting through the liner wall. If you see black, tar-like material squeezing through pinholes or seams in the liner, the liner has breached. Creosote passing through means flue gas is finding a path into the chimney cavity.
- The “eggy” or acrid smell even when the fireplace is cold. A failed liner allows flue gasses to condense into the surrounding masonry and push odors back into the living space. Marietta homes with high summer humidity make this smell much more noticeable in July and August.
- Rust streaks or staining on the exterior chimney face. A liner that’s leaking moisture into the masonry will eventually show as orange or brown staining on brick. This means water is traveling from inside the chimney outward, not the other way around.
- Your inspector’s camera shows separations at the seams. When the liner’s welded or riveted seams open up, that’s not a patch job. We show you the camera feed in real time so you can see the separation yourself before deciding anything.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Marietta, a Copperfield liner replacement generally runs $2,200 to $4,800 installed. The spread comes down to three things: liner height (two-story chimneys cost more in material and labor), diameter (wider liners are pricier per foot), and whether the old liner can be extracted cleanly or has to be broken out in sections. Here’s the line-item reality:
- Liner material: $30 to $75 per linear foot depending on diameter and alloy.
- Labor and extraction of the old liner: $800 to $1,900 for most single-flue jobs.
- Top plate, cap, and termination fittings: $150 to $500.
- Crown sealing around the new liner: $200 to $450 if the existing crown is intact.
Every Copperfield replacement we install in Marietta includes a written price before any work begins, a written guarantee covering the installation, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within 12 months, the second visit is free. There is no ambiguity here. You get the exact number before we touch a tool.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely do as a homeowner is inspect what’s visible: look for flaking metal at the base of the fireplace, check for rust streaks on the exterior, and note any unusual smells in the summer. What you should not do is attempt a liner extraction or installation yourself. A failed liner isn’t dangerous to touch the way a garage spring is, but ladder work on a two-story Marietta roof, pulling a 25 or 35 foot metal tube out of a masonry chase, and re-terminating at the cap is dangerous work. Falls from chimney height happen to capable people. If you’ve spotted liner flakes or rust staining, call us at (229) 350-8952 and we’ll come out with a camera, show you exactly what’s going on, and give you a written price before anything moves forward.
FAQs
A Copperfield 316L or 316Ti stainless liner in a properly maintained Marietta chimney typically lasts 20 to 30 years. Georgia’s high summer humidity combined with wood-burning creosote exposure shortens that lifespan versus a gas-only application, which is why we inspect liners annually rather than assuming they’re fine. Call (229) 350-8952 to schedule an inspection with camera proof.
A liner with pinholes or seam separation cannot be reliably patched; patching compounds fail within months because they can’t handle thermal expansion cycles. We only say “repair” when the liner surface is intact and the issue is a connector or termination fitting, which we can swap without a full liner job. If we tell you a replacement isn’t needed, we’ll show you the camera view that proves it.
Most single-flue liner replacements take one day, sometimes two if the old liner is seized in place and we have to extract it in sections. We’ll never quote you a two-hour job on a two-story chimney because extraction and re-termination take real time. Before we start, you have a written price and a schedule window in writing.
We carry Copperfield and Copperfield-compatible stainless liners in the most common Marietta sizes: 4, 5, 5.5, and 6 inches, along with matching top plates, caps, and connectors from professional trade brands like DuraFlex and Gelco. If your liner measures outside the typical range, we order it and typically install within a week. Call (229) 350-8952 and we’ll confirm what’s on the truck for your size.
